Charity at GKTCC
During the course of the academic year of 2019/20, GKT Cricket Club made giant strides in the realms of charity work. Historically, the cricket club has been always committed to raising funds for those who need it the most, as can be noted through raising the most money at the KCL RAG events for several years running. However, with the appointment of a specific charity officer within the committee starting 2019, the efforts have been more focused than ever. A liaison was set up with Bloodwise, a charity with a personal importance to the club, and numerous events were held throughout the year consistently, raising upwards of £1000. With events occurring on a monthly, and sometimes weekly basis, the club engaged members in various events, such as 5-A-Side football tournaments, Indoor Cricket Tournaments, 11-A-Side Inter-team matches and even just bucketing, simply trying to give back to the community.
In these challenging times, with COVID-19 affecting the whole of the world and in the UK stretching the NHS and its healthcare workers to the limit, GKTCC decided to do its bit. Members of the club took part in weekly physical challenges ranging from wall-sits to 2 minute+ planks in order to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity.
A massive thank you to everyone who donated or took part in a challenge with the total raised smashing our initial target of £250, reaching £415 in our month long appeal!
We hope that this small gesture will make a genuine difference to everyone at Guy’s and St Thomas’ trust and is by no means the last fundraising effort to be undertaken by the club.
The Embers is a charity football match between GKT Cricket & GKT Hockey, started with the inaugural event in November 2019. Initiated by the GKT Cricket team, the tournament gives an opportunity for the two teams go head to head, with not only the trophy on the line, but a great deal of bragging rights. More importantly however, all proceeds raised were donated to Bloodwise, a blood cancer research charity, with approximately £200 being raised in funds for them. The event this year was a smashing success, with the two teams participating with great enthusiasm; with both teams eager to contribute further, we aspire to make this an annual event to test the teams’ rivalries, all whilst raising money for charity.
Every year GKTCC rounds off the indoor cricket season by holding an intra-club charity tournament. Usually an enjoyable day with a big social afterwards, last year's tournament was a great success raising X for charity. The tournament is held on a Saturday in the second term of the year and sees the return of some of our much-loved old boys. Freshers captain the teams consisting of current members and are given a budget to build their teams at an intra-club auction. These teams then play in a league stage against one another, as well as the old boys team, to try to finish in the top 2 and compete in the final. With friends playing against each other the tournament, naturally, tends to get competitive with some good cricket being played. Last year's tournament came down to a nail-biting final over, with around 50 members in attendance.
CHARITY INDOOR CUP
The Bloodwise 7-a-side football tournament is an annual intra club competition played on an Astro turf pitch in central London. In the 2019/20 tournament, GKTCC managed to raise over £250 for Bloodwise whilst enjoying weekly football fun in the off season. The club especially enjoyed the giant killing of NAPOL19 FC by the Ugandan Knuckles, a 7 game win streak halted in the final by the defiant UK team to lift the first ever Bloodwise Cup.
The teams are decided by a draft system in which there is an auction and all players are bought into teams! Stay tuned for next years tournament from October time…
GKT CC are a club that are renowned for putting charity at the forefront of many events organised throughout the year. Here at GKT CC, we understand the importance of giving back to the less fortunate members of our society and would like to play a role in making the world a better place. One of our most successful endeavours is our annual collection of donations from the community during the Raising and Giving (RAG) week. This is a time where members of our club go out of their way to raise money for those who need it more than we do. The willingness and innovation of ways in which members have raised money for this noble cause, means that we have raised the most amount of money out of any club at King’s College London each year, for the last 3 years. This is a title that we are immensely proud of and wish to uphold in the years to come.
W GKT GRACE CUP
W.G. Grace is long believed to be the pioneer of modern cricket. He was the first player to score a 100 before lunch in a first-class game and produce the double of 1000 runs with 100 wickets to his name. His feats are enhanced when you consider he made his debut in 1857. To honour such a stalwart of the game, we have created a T10 competition in his name.
The WGKT Grace Cup is a charity tournament bringing together many GKT sports teams in a competitive yet enjoyable day of cricket. The sports teams comprise of GKT HC, FC, RC and of course CC.
Whilst you would assume Cricket would be the runaway winners, the multi-talented members of all GKT sports teams ensured that there was a tense final played between GKT Football and Cricket in the inaugural competition in 2018.
In its first year, the competition raised over £150. With interest growing, this competition will continue to build, making it a day to certainly mark in your calendar early.
