Having only started playing indoor cricket as a club in 2016, we have developed into a strong side in the format. GKT CC indoor 1s had a very successful season in 2019/20. The team crowned both the NAMS and UH indoor champions, underlying our belief that we are the best medical school indoor cricket team in the country. The indoor 1s lost only team 2 games all season, the second of which unfortunately led us to be knocked out of the BUCS competition on NRR.
Every year the indoor 1s strive to compete with some of the best teams in country and strive to win all the competitions the team enters. This inevitably leads to a competitive culture for the squad but this is complemented by an exceptional social side, with weekly squad meals/socials to go with the infamous guys bar sports nights as part of the wider club.
The indoor 1s will compete in 4 competitions in the upcoming season this autumn:
The BUCS indoor league is the official indoor cricket competition for universities all across the UK. We will begins our journey to the finals in the south east London division, played across two Sundays in first term. Finishing in the top two leads to a regional finals round which is followed by a national finals round; Both taking place in the second term of the year. Having missed on progressing in this competition on NRR last year the squad’s aim will be to return, progress to the national finals and bring home the coveted BUCS trophy.
NAMS is the national indoor cricket competition for all medical schools in the UK. An annual event it usually takes places over a weekend in first term with a big inter-uni social after the final. The competition was first hosted in London by GKTCC in 2016 as a 4 university competition but has since grown, with last years competition, in Leeds, featuring 8 teams. The indoor 1s have won a NAMS tournament every year since the inaugural one was held and the aim will be to retain our title next year.
The annual United Hospital indoor tournament is held on a Saturday, in second term, with the 5 medics school sides in London taking part. The event was first held in 2018, with the indoor 1s finishing runners up. Last year, this was rectified with the indoor 1s finishing the day by completing a chase of 134 without losing a wicket and 2.2 overs remaining. The squad will return next year aiming to defend their title and bring home yet another trophy.
The ECB runs indoor leagues for clubs throughout the country. With our campus being located in Southwark we enter into the Surrey league. Having not entered into this competition last year, indoor 1s play will return to the Wimbledon division playing games on Thursday evenings throughout first term. The winners of this league progress to the regional finals with the winners being crowned Surrey champions. The Surrey champions then compete in a national finals round. We have never won the Wimbledon division with the reigning Surrey champions, Wimbledon Cricket Club, usually finishing first in our league. However, using the indoor skills we have developed over the past two years, we aim to rectify this aberration in our record and dethrone Wimbledon Cricket Club as Surrey champions.
